————————

This happened when I was on the last train home after a drinking party.
Since I was heading in the opposite direction of the rush, the train was practically empty.
After a while, it was just me and this worn-out, salaryman-looking old guy left in the car.
We were sitting at opposite ends of the carriage, each on our own bench.

The old guy looked like he was dozing off, pretty comfortably.
He was probably either dead tired or totally drunk.

I was a little sleepy myself, so I closed my eyes.
But only about five or six seconds later I opened them again.

I caught sight of the old guy in my peripheral vision.
It looked like he had moved one row closer to me.
But I was pretty drunk myself, so I didn’t care that much and shut my eyes again.

A few seconds later, I felt something off and opened my eyes again.
This time, I was sure of it — he had moved another row closer.

I started thinking I might be in trouble.
If he tried to pickpocket me or something, I’d grab him and hand him over to the station staff.
So I decided to keep my eyes half open and pretend to be asleep, just to see what he’d do.

Sure enough, the guy stood up after checking that I had my eyes closed.

Was he coming this way? I wondered. But no — that’s not what he did.
He just stood in the middle of the carriage… and started spinning in circles.

As he spun, he started muttering:
“I won’t be fooled ~ I won’t be fooled ~ I won’t be fooled by someone pretending to sleep ~”

That’s when I got genuinely freaked out.
I kept pretending to sleep until we reached the next station.
Just as the doors were about to close, I sprang up and bolted off the train.

He didn’t follow me.

But I didn’t have money for a taxi either, so I ended up walking more than two hours to get home.
It was the worst thing that happened to me.

Maybe he is like the old man in Banana Yoshimoto's short story Newly-wed in the book Lizard and will transform into a beautiful woman. Thanks for sharing as always.
@George You’re so well-read ๐Ÿ˜† I remember reading Banana Yoshimoto when I was an elementary school kid and not understanding anything ๐Ÿคฃ I’ll try to read her books again. Thank you so much for your comment ๐Ÿ˜Š
