The horror manga “Hauntress”

In Japan, too, stalking incidents are rapidly increasing.

Over the past three years, 17 cases of murder or attempted murder have been reported, and when cases involving injury, assault, and threats are included, the number of stalking incidents reaches nearly 1,000.

Among them, there was a case that ended in a particularly shocking way.
We spoke with Hiwatari-san of Japan Private Service Co., Ltd., who was in charge of this case.

In January 1998, when Yamamoto-san (pseudonym), who lived in Tokyo, returned home from work, he found a woman standing in front of the door to his apartment.
She was Keiko (pseudonym), a woman he had dated briefly in the past.
He had asked to break up with her six months earlier, and he believed they would never see each other again.

However, the woman could not let go of him and began visiting his apartment almost daily.
Feeling increasingly uneasy about her persistence, Yamamoto-san consulted Hiwatari-san’s company.

At first, Hiwatari-san thought the situation was not particularly alarming and advised Yamamoto-san to simply keep an eye on her.

But one month later, when Yamamoto-san returned home, she was nowhere to be seen in front of his door. Relieved, he unlocked the door and stepped inside—only to freeze in shock.
She was waiting for him inside his apartment.

She explained that she had asked the building manager to unlock the door.
In a fit of temper, Yamamoto-san shouted that he already had a new girlfriend and told her to stop acting as if she were still his girlfriend.
Just as he said that, she suddenly stood up, slowly raised the razor she had been holding in one hand, and slashed her own wrist, somehow smiling as she did it.

Terrified, Yamamoto-san rushed her to the hospital.
Keiko survived and was admitted for treatment.
Deeply shaken by her disturbing behaviour, Yamamoto-san quit his job in Tokyo while she was still hospitalised, and moved back to his parents’ home in Nagano Prefecture.

However, three months after the move, he was confronted with unimaginable horror.

One day he returned from work and entered the living room where his family was relaxing, only to find her there—cheerfully chatting with his family.
Yamamoto-san was too stunned to speak as he heard his mother say, “She’s going to become your big sister.”

Keiko stood up and said, “I’m Keiko. Yoroshiku (nice to meet you), Hiroshi-san.”
She was engaged to marry Yamamoto-san’s older brother.

It was a staggering finale — his stalker marrying his own brother.
She eventually did marry him and even had children. From that point on, the two would be bound together for life.

Was this the ending she had truly wanted?

Yikes and talk about awkward family get-togethers. People are still scarier than monsters. By the way, https://www.instagram.com/bugbearphotography/ is my new Instagram account.

Hi Saya ๐Ÿ’–

I hope you are doing well. Please have a good rest and take care of your health ๐Ÿ™

I've never been stalked and I hope I'd never be. It can't be a relaxing and pleasant experience. I do have a habit of stalking the stray cats loitering at home whenever I want to take them to the vets. Heheh.

I hope Mr Yamamoto told his family about her stalking, though based on various stalking movies he probably didn't to avoid causing discord in the family. Especially if he didn't have any solid evidence like a police report. It's important to report to the police if we feel our safety is threatened.

How about you, Saya? Have you ever been stalked? This is a good read. Thank you, Saya ๐Ÿ˜Š

This reminds me of Deuteronomy 25:5-10 in the Bible

5 If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her. 6 The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.

7 However, if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife, she shall go to the elders at the town gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to me.” 8 Then the elders of his town shall summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying, “I do not want to marry her,” 9 his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals, spit in his face and say, “This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.” 10 That man’s line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled.

That's nasty. I can imagine horrible implications after the story. This also implies she's a smooth talker, someone with a charisma and charm of a psychopath.

I wanna comment about the story but I got distracted by Allucinator's comment. "Family of the Unsandaled"... it can't be real, can it? lol

ahem, regarding the story... that is some sick thing to do. I imagine Hiroshi would have told the brother about it, but he won't believe him because that's what the psychopath does to you. She must have charmed him and manipulate him to believe that such psycho behavior is unbelievable coming from her.

Is the story from Hauntress manga or is that totally different thing? Funny story, I recall I used to read manga series called (the localized title here at least) Ghost Stories at School. Well, it's not actually a manga, but light novel maybe? They have reader-submitted ghost stories and also some short ghost stories with illustration by real authors. One of the frequent authors was Minetaro Mochizuki! Hahah natsukashii...

Thank you for translating this, Saya. I hope you have a fun weekend.

By the way, on twitter some people have been talking about Kinki Chihou no Aru Basho ni Tsuite. It's originally a book but now also come in manga and even adapted to movie by Koji Shiraishi, the director of Noroi. People said the book was very scary. I am excited to watch the movie.
@George Very awkward indeed๐Ÿคฃ Thank you for letting me know of your new Instagram account. I’ve thought about creating an account on Bluesky, but just managing the accounts on X and Instagram has been a bit of a challenge for me ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
@nunu Hello, nunu! Thank you so much for your kind concern for my health๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™ I’m feeling much better than before!

Wow you have cats? I love cats๐Ÿ˜Š I do not have pets right now but I might consider having one when I am an old lady and need some company๐Ÿ˜†

If I were Mr. Yamamoto, I would not have hesitated to tell everyone what she did๐Ÿ˜† I wonder though if my family would belive me. If she was good at acting and lying, I might get myself into troubles instead.

I have been stalked by someone once and it was a chilling experience.
Being so obssessed over someone comes from low self-esteem. It’s very sad when a person doesn’t recognise their true worth and value.

Stay safe and only become friends with mentally healthy people!๐Ÿ˜†
Thank you so much for your comment! Take care๐Ÿ’–
@allucinator Thank you for the fascinating quote from the Bible! It’s scary how ancient people conducted family affairs. And to think some people still do this kind of thing in some parts of the modern world๐Ÿ˜ฑ

For many stalkers, their worth as a person is tightly linked to the reactions they get from their limerant objects, I imagine. The pride of the woman in this story must have been hurt so much so that she needed to take revenge on him in this way, perhaps to make him remember for the rest of his life that he made a huge mistake by not choosing her๐Ÿ˜…
@Anon (23 January 2026 at 10:47) The Hauntress manga is unrelated to the story. I put it there because it’s a story about a female stalker and I thought some people might be interested in knowing about it๐Ÿ˜†.

I am a sensitive person and have been already traumatised by several horror manga, so I am not reading any more of them although I’m interested…๐Ÿคฃ

You’re welcome! I appreciate your comment! Have a wonderful weekend too!
I’ve heard of the story. Perhaps I’ll try watching the movie too!๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you for the story, Saya.

I have seen this kind of plot several times in the past across media. I guess to people like her, everything else doesn't matter as she has finally gotten what she wanted (to be able to stay close to Yamamoto). Everything else is secondary or tertiary. It might be a ruse, but it might also be that their love towards their current spouse is just not the same kind (familial, etc.). In any case, it's obvious the main goal is the ex, Yamamoto.

Women can be amazing in this aspect. Not in the sense that they're manipulative, but in the sense that if they really want to do something, they can go at unbelievable length to achieve that. In this kind of case, it's misguided, but there are also cases such as single mother raising a child on her own without any support whatsoever since pregnancy.

People might think that in this kind of case, Keiko would act terribly towards her husband and child in the future. I disagree. The thing is, for this to work, she has to have a smooth marital and family with the brother and child, or else she'll lose her access towards Yamamoto and his family. She wouldn't be able to marry his brother, wouldn't be able to be accepted by his family, would be kicked out, and such otherwise. The child is actually also a bargaining chip: it would make it harder for the family to do anything to her in case anything were to happen.
@Anon (23 January 2026 at 23:57) I feel like this is just a form of self-punishment๐Ÿ˜ฑ It appears Keiko won at the end, but she actually lost! In an attempt to heal her wounded pride, she lost her chance of ever being in a fulfilling relationship in which she can be really loved๐Ÿ˜ฑ Obssessiving over someone only reaffirms the conviction that we are worthless. Never a good idea. As you said, women can be amazing but Keiko used her power in a totally wrong way!

Thank you so much for your insightful comment!๐Ÿ˜Š
