The Newborn Baby

Please do NOT copy/distribute my works without permission. Thank you. (WHY?)

A cryptic story for you! :D

A new baby was born in a hospital.

On the very same day at night, a nurse was making her rounds when, to her utter dismay, she found the baby had died.
The hospital, to cover up the death, immediately prepared a substitute baby.
The mother was unconscious when she gave birth to her baby, so she hadn't yet seen the baby.
Besides, the substitute baby looked exactly like the dead baby so that there was no way the mother would be able to tell the difference.

Next day, as soon as the mother saw the baby, her face immediately turned into an expression of horror and she screeched loudly:
"This thing is not my baby!!!!"

I think that, logic wise, the mother did actually see the baby after giving birth.Just in the nursery thing...also hello Saya!!

My guest is that the mother killed the baby xD

So the mother killed the baby..?

Oh darn. I read this when there were still no comments and I AM SO DISAPPOINTED THAT I NEVER SAW IT. Wow! So the mother killed the baby, huh? Now that the others mentioned it, it suddenly makes so much sense!

"The mother was unconscious when she gave birth to her baby, so she hadn't yet seen the baby."
"This thing is not my baby!!!!"
If she hadn't seen her baby then why would she knows that the substitute wasn't her baby ?

Hmm.. is the mother expecting the baby not to look like human baby? Like werewolf baby or demon or puppy or something? Haha. Or maybe the baby is a half vampire baby. The baby is alive but not supposed to be breathing. Like vampire.

Or maybe the mother knew subconsciously that her baby died, even though she has been unconscious since before the baby was born.

This a good one, Saya-san. :) Thank you for this story.

But how could she manage to kill the baby if she's been unconscious all along?

They "prepared" a substitute baby? Maybe they really just made something that looked like her baby, instead of giving her a real one. That would explain why she says "thing".

"Besides, the substitute baby looked exactly like the dead baby"

I'm guessing the nurse replaced an alive baby that looked as dead as the mother's dead baby?

" the substitute baby looked exactly like the dead baby"

It didn't look like her newborn child. It looked like a corpse.

stuck on this story, but I find the theory on the mother is the one who killed the baby could be possible. I don't have any other better guesses.

I mean, since it was stated that the babies look the same, it shouldn't be because the substituted baby is in different color/race, or they mixed up the gender. hmm so yeah, guess the mom killed the baby that's why she know it isn't hers.

My guess is that the killer already tell the mother about the baby's death and show her the picture of the baby, and to be able to do this...that means the killer is someone that can freely enter her room anytime

It is creepy that how they can provide a baby subtitute..

I guess what's given as a substitute baby is not live. It is a doll! :P

I think the baby was too hideous for the mother to accept that it was her own child ( including the substitute one and the dead one ). Then again this makes no sense, every mother would love her own baby despite the appearance.
Unknown said…
maybe the substitute baby is older than her newborn baby.. like the baby didn't have umbilical cord anymore..

or maybe mother's instinct :D

agree with n404 and some others' similar theories about the substitute baby looking the same as the DEAD baby. so what's the point of replacing it. -_- stupid hospital.
Anonymous said…
um, not sure about everybody's answer, but it could be possible that the baby that died is a different gender from the subtitute, even though they look alike. that's my guess. . .so, y-eah, that's what I think.

1. she killed the baby.

2. "This thing is not my baby!!!!" = not a real baby. doll?

3. it should be a monster baby?

not good at guessing Orz

Could they have given the mother a doll?

Here is my guess: There are two mothers. One whose baby had died and one whose baby was lived. The unconscious mother's baby is the one who died. They switched the babies so she awoke to a living baby. However, the other mother was left with the corpse-like substitute, and she's the one that cried "This thing is not my baby!"

The baby was already dead in the womb, the mother already knew that the child was dead before labour and gave birth to a stillborn. So the substitute was not her baby because its alive.

This cryptic story sounds like a possible introduction for a 2nd Kansen movie. :D
This one took me a while to get. I had to read the comments to figure it out, but it's great nonetheless. Thank you for this!

WHAT IF ITS A PARALLEL WORLD WHERE EVERYONE'S A MONSTER AND THEY REPLACED WITH A HUMAN BABY SO THE MOTHER REFERS TO IT AS A THINGS SINCE HUMANS WILL NOW BE FREAKS AND FREAKS ARE NORMAL jkjk

Its exam week :'(

Yeah, the substitute baby looked exactly like the "dead baby"... I agree. Considering all babies look the same when they're dead, it means the substitute is a corpse ^^; probably
Afiya N. Syarif said…
yeahh... i agree, the substitute looked exactly like the "dead baby" (notice the word 'dead') so assuming all babies look the same when they're dead, the substitute is a baby corpse... :| probably
Usually the answer is pretty simple, so I don't think it's the dead baby theory. Sorry guys just my opinion.

I agree with the mother killing the baby theory.

I don't think the "replacement baby" is a corpse, because it would be incredibly stupid to replace a dead baby by another dead baby. Nor do I agree with the stillborn baby theory because, why would the doctors put a stillborn baby in a room with the mother ?

Also, when to mother sees the "new" baby, she doesn't say "Oh no, my baby is dead" but "That's not my baby", meaning that she do reaaly recognize that, dead or not, the baby who's there is not hers (but, ok, I admit that this coulb be explaine by her being in denial...)

Two other point kind of bother me here:
1) the dead of newborn babies is not really uncommon, it happens quite frequently (can be because of medical conditions for example), so why would the hospital staff think that this particuliar baby should be replaced by another one? Why don't they just tell the mother that, sadly, her baby died soon after birth ? Did THEY do something bad (like medical error)?
2) Does all the hospiatls have a bunch of "remplacement babies" they can use just in case? I mean : where did they find the new baby? Where was it coming from? Since I don't agree with the "dead new baby" theory, it's a big question for me...
EXCEPT if the real baby died in a way that leaves some traces (like strangulation marks or something) and then they replaced the baby by another dead baby (from the morgue, then) just so that it was impossible to say how the real baby really had died...

This, then, could go with the "mother killed her baby" theory : she strangled the baby, then the baby has strangulations marks ; the nurse sees it and think "Oops, the mother could sue us because of our lack in security" and decides to replace the baby by another dead baby who has no strangulation marks, so they can tell the mother that her baby died in a "natural" way, not knowing that the mother actually knows that it's not true...
Flow said…
Ok...double post here because I tought of something tonight...

So, as I said before : where do the new baby come from ? If they can replace the dead baby, it's because they have babies they can "give away", but they couldn't give away babies who "belong" to other parents, so...
MAYBE there is some kind of "secret lab" in the hospital where they create babies in a non-natural way (completely in vitro or something). The babies created there are then not carried by a mother and have no ombilical cord and therefor no belly button.
When they "prepared" the nex baby, they paid attention to the skintone, the eye colour, etc. BUT they didn't think of the fact that he doesn't have a belly button and that's how the mother recognized that it couldn't be her baby.

By the way...Hello Saya :) I'm sorry I didn't greet you in my first comment, it was kind of rude of me. It is a very nice blog you've got here. Thanks for all the hard work ^^

I'm going with either the mom killed the baby, or the nurse is crazy.

If mom killed the baby, it's understandable that she would freak out. It's more likely she would have killed it in between postpartum depression and inability to raise a child, so finding out it had survived would not only be confusing, and saddle her with a baby she didn't want, but wrack her with guilt.

The nurse didn't say there was a mother who died in birth or anything about where they got the 'substitute.' just that they gave her a it. It could have been a doll or something.

The nurse says they look exactly alike, other wise I might have assumed it was a race joke (but I don't think Saya would post those)
Kitty said…
Ooh, also on my 'crazy nurse' theory- she says, rather than 'the substitute looked exactly like her baby,' 'the substitute looked like the dead baby.'

So it could be that the baby didn't look like the right woman's baby. Or, more in the scary nurse theory, that she gave her a different sickly or dead baby (or the doll or whatever in my other post could look like one).
Kitty said…
So reading the comments I love the long crazy theories, like about the baby making lab, or monsters, or so on, and I like Shannon's because it's a bit less scary, but I thought of a different thing.

Maybe her baby died due to birth defects/deformity. The nurse got her another deformed child, and the mother is in denial.

I think she did kill the baby and that's why she says "this thing is not my baby" because a normal human baby can't possibly revive after being murdered and appear as if nothing happened.
Anonymous said…
The hospital "prepared " a substitute baby and the mother said the "thing" was not her baby. If this wasn't a cryptic story this choice of words would have been fine but I do think it's that simple: it's not a human baby it's a thing that's supposed to look like a human newborn.
Unknown said…
I agree with the killer mother...

but I got another opinion...
the mother did not want the child...
so, even if the baby is hers, she still gonna say "this thing is not my baby"...
Krazilazy said…
Where did the hospital get the subtitute baby? Caught another child or something?
Unknown said…
"This THING is not my baby" clearly enough right?
Unknown said…
"...hadn't yet seen", so the mother has seen the baby?
Unknown said…
It could just be a mother's love and that's how she knows it's hers?
Unknown said…
OK, here is my best guess:
The mother is a ghost or devil.etc.... so she knew for a fact that her baby wouldn't be normal and maybe because the baby was a ghost too therefore it was not breathing. That's why she realizes from the first glance that its not her baby
Unknown said…
I've got it! Geez took me so long. The BABY! Her newborn baby died because it probably had a phatalogy (and believe me it can be really disturbing). They found another child that looked like it and the mother can't believe it.
