Mother Sofa

Do city people actually like this kind of thing?

“A private sauna where “adults can return to being babies” has opened in Roppongi.
It features a “Mother Sofa,” designed so you can be held, rocked, and watched over by a mother.

The concept is “120 minutes of giving up being an adult.”

You move through a sauna inspired by the inside of a womb, a cold bath reminiscent of a newborn’s first bath, and a shower where you rest your head on a mother’s lap.
Finally, you relax on the “Mother Sofa,” where a mother holds you, rocks you, strokes you, and watches over you.

It’s a place where modern adults, who are prone to losing their emotional support systems, can stop being adults for a while and completely surrender themselves to someone else.”

⭐️The first picture shows the “Mother Sofa,” a a huge relaxation sofa at the heart of SAUNA MOTHER  that spatially recreates the experience of being held in your mother’s arms.

“The Mother Sofa is designed to cradle you from head to toe, creating a neutral posture that minimizes unnecessary pressure on any part of the body, while allowing you to fully surrender your weight in a baby-like C-shaped curve.”

“Through projection mapping, a “mother” appears on the Mother Sofa.
Users can choose one of four different “Mothers” and relax while being watched over by her expression, meeting her gaze as they surrender their bodies to the sofa.”

21:
TERRIFYING

5:
“Fetal sauna” has kind of a nice ring to it.

6:
That face is creepy.

7:
>>6
Don’t worry! You can change the face. 😁

8:
WTF I’ve never seen that face before.

9:
Is this Japan in another dimension?

10:
I thought this was from a horror movie or some kind of dystopian story.

11:
This looks like it’s going to go out of business pretty quickly.

12:
So this is supposed to be a return to the womb, right?
This isn’t what I had in mind.

13:
And you can switch between these two types as well, so it’s insanely cost-effective.

14:
Whoever made this has never actually been a fetus.

15:
Apparently, they’ll even give you a “rebirth certificate” with a photo of you taken inside the sauna.

“Certificate of Rebirth

This is to certify that the above-named person has once relinquished adulthood and been reborn at SAUNA MOTHER.”

16:
CRAZY

17:
Eek

18:
Poor Izanami, being forced to work without her consent.

19:
Who the hell would go there?

20:
A birth-bath cold plunge and a naked-woman sofa.

“Newborn Bath — Cold Plunge

After the sauna, step into a deep cold plunge inspired by a newborn’s first bath. Surrounded by curtains designed to recreate the blurred vision of a newborn, this 80 cm-deep cold plunge (15°C) is designed to make you feel slightly smaller, as if you’ve returned to the scale of a newborn.

A giant mother’s hand emerges from the wall and gently pours warm water over you, recreating the experience of a first bath.”

“Mother’s Lap Shower

Recreating the sensation of resting on your mother’s lap while she washed you as a baby. Warm water pours from three directions—left, right, and above—surrounding your entire body and gently warming you.”

21:
I’M SCARED

23:
The prices are dirt cheap too, so everyone should go right now. 😎

1 person: ¥8,500
2 people: ¥12,000
3 people: ¥15,000
4 people: ¥20,000

33:
>>23
4 people…?

Are you supposed to go into a place like this with multiple people?

26:
This was obviously thought up by someone completely out of touch. Only some crazy rich person would go to a place like this.

28:
Are we going to get a new generation of people saying, “I don’t want to be born”…?

Otonamaki

⭐️NOTE:

34:
>>28
There was a movie about something like this, wasn’t there?

29:
Sounds like it’s run by some mysterious religious cult.

30:
Don’t they have anything where you can experience what it feels like to go through your mom’s birth canal?

36:
This is way too grotesque.

2:
Everyone wants to be a baby.
You guys secretly want to be babies too.

The Vision Behind SAUNA MOTHER

Yuka Taki, Representative Director of WIQOMEDIAN Inc. / Creative Director of SAUNA MOTHER

“We didn’t set out from the beginning to create some eccentric ‘Mother’s sauna.’ I discovered saunas at the age of 17, and for more than 20 years, I’ve maintained a routine of going to the sauna three times a week. Throughout that time, I had one persistent question: what happens in the final relaxation (Totonoi) space?

Even when your body has finally reached a state of complete relaxation, you often can’t find a position that allows you to fully let go. The materials may be hard, or certain points of contact may hurt, causing you to unconsciously tense some part of your body to avoid the discomfort. And then, just when your consciousness has entered that exquisite state of Totonoi—deep relaxation after the sauna—you are suddenly pulled back into the real world.

I kept thinking about what it would take to create a position in which the body could completely let go, where every point of contact was soft, and where you could surrender your entire body to the support beneath you. About nine years ago, I arrived at the idea of being held in a mother’s arms.

In other words, being surrounded by comfortable materials, gently rocked, caressed, and looked at with affection. Physiologically, these experiences have been shown in various studies to promote the release of oxytocin, often called the ‘love hormone,’ and to act as a switch that helps the human body move from a state of tension toward a state of ‘calm and connection.’

After 20 years of sauna experience, I came to believe that a deep sense of security is essential for taking the quality of Totonoi to the next level. When you are carrying worries or deep regrets, your thoughts can continue to spin even while you are relaxing, making it difficult for your mind to settle.

So I began to wonder: if we could recreate the experience of being held by a mother and create a sense of security by encouraging the release of oxytocin, could we create not only the ideal sofa—one that does not interfere with Totonoi—but something that actually elevates the quality of the experience itself?

That is how I began to think about it.

For a person’s heart to be filled with a genuine sense of security, an intimate relationship with another person—like that between a mother and a newborn—is naturally important. But building such a relationship takes time, and there is always the risk of being hurt or losing someone. Besides, a fully grown adult cannot exactly be held by their own mother anymore. And worries and regrets cannot simply be made to disappear just because we want them to.

That is why, at SAUNA MOTHER, we focused on the human body’s ‘automatic physiological responses’—the way being held, rocked, caressed, and looked at can promote the release of oxytocin.

By incorporating these elements into the Mother Sofa, we set out to create a mechanism that could, even without an actual intimate relationship, bypass conscious intention and rational thought and allow the heart to become filled with a sense of security almost involuntarily.

This is not a medical treatment, and we do not guarantee the actual release of oxytocin or any medical effects. However, we read through countless research papers and incorporated into a single device, as much as possible, the postures, stimuli, and functions that, in theory, may promote its release.

We sincerely designed it with one goal in mind: for people to leave feeling, even if they cannot quite explain why, just a little more emotionally fulfilled.

At the same time, this is also a new kind of playground for adults.

You don’t have to drink alcohol to have fun. You can laugh together as someone else temporarily returns to the state of an infant, while sharing the same sensations of heat and cold, comfort and surprise.

For example, imagine a boss or senior colleague who is normally intimidating and composed, openly allowing themselves to be spoiled by their ‘mother.’ Their juniors might watch and laugh.

Through this strange and unexpected experience, we believe that sharing emotions and physical sensations can deepen relationships between people—without relying on the language, etiquette, and other conventions that are normally considered essential to adult communication.

That is what we wanted to create.

And so, nine years after the original idea was born, we ended up spending more than the price of a luxury foreign car on a single relaxation sofa that would normally cost only a few tens of thousands of yen.

We are now living through a transformation that some describe as being on the scale of the Industrial Revolution. We are witnessing the values we once believed in being overturned and redefined day by day.

The principles and foundations we once relied upon are being shaken, and it feels as though every adult is being confronted, every second, with the question: ‘How should I live from here?’

There may be many nights ahead when we want to rely on someone—or something. When we simply want to lean against something. When we want to surrender completely and let someone else hold everything for us.

That is why I believe society needs a new place of support for adults.

And that is why we are wholeheartedly creating a place where adults can, for a moment, stop being ‘adults.’”

Please note: This facility is not a medical institution and does not guarantee the release of oxytocin or any other medical or psychological effects.

Look, I get it. They built this place with the best of intentions. But they MOST DEFINITELY did not accomplish what they tried to accomplish here. The intentions were noble, but the execution turned out to be an unholy abomination.

"Who the hell would go there?" indeed. 😂
@Diogo What are you saying?? This is exactly we need in this stressful modern world!!😡🤣

I think the problem is this facility looks incomplete — we also need a kindergarten sauna where we can enjoy being toddlers again!!🤣

Thank you so much for your comment ~💖
