A Chimney of a Sentō

(Translated and Arranged by Saya)

A few years ago, someone called K san transferred to my workplace.

K san moved into the same company housing I lived in, and one day, while we were chatting, he asked me:
“What is that tall chimney that you can see from the windows of this building?”
He looked slightly pale as he asked the question.

I had no idea what he meant.
Although K san and I lived in the same company housing, our rooms were far apart, and the view from my room and the view from K san’s room were not necessarily the same.
Besides, not being from here, I was not familiar with the area.
So, without thinking much about it, I replied, it must be a chimney of a sentō (Note: public bath) or something.
That was the end of the topic and we never talked about it again.

However, about a month later, K san was found dead in a residential area not so far from the company housing.
His body, I heard, was in a horrendous condition.
Strangely, K san was thought to have died by falling from a very high place, but in the residential area where he was found, there were no tall buildings he could have jumped off of.
Nevertheless, it was obvious that his death was not caused by a car accident, nor was there a reason to suspect foul play, so in the end, they simply concluded that it was an accidental death.

In order to attend K san’s funeral, I had to travel all the way to his hometown.
The town where K san was born was a certain seaside town in Kyūshū region
While I was in a car driven by one of K san’s relatives, heading towards K san’s parents’ home, my eyes riveted to an object that appeared before me.

A colossal chimney projected from an old, ramshackle factory building.

The relative told me that the chimney was referred to as“the Phantom Chimney “ by the locals, and it had been the symbol of the town for ages.

I do not know why, but I somehow thought that perhaps the chimney K san saw from his room was identical to this chimney.

By the way, recently, I have been living my day to day life in acute anxiety.
It is because I have been seeing a tall chimney from the window of my room.

It could be only my imagination, but the chimney resembles the one I saw in K san’s hometown.

The chimney stands far in the distance, and it is possible it has always been there but I just never noticed it before.

It could also be a structure that has been newly constructed.
But despite all these possibilities, I am convinced that it has suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

I have asked around to see if any of my colleagues knew about it, but have only gotten ambiguous replies.
I do not have the courage to go near the chimney and see it for myself.

Everyone, please, I beg you, could you possibly, right now, look out the window of your room?
If you spot a chimney that you have never hitherto seen before, please let me know.
How on earth could this kind of thing ever happen?

Hello, amazing beautiful people! Thank you for visiting my blog!
I hope you like this week’s new story! 😄

Would you like to try visiting a sentō?
The culture of sentō is actually fast disappearing!
If you are interested in it, you’d better hurry up! Go there while you still can!

I hope you are having a good weekend! Don’t forget to love yourself!

See you again next week! Take care ❤️

And suddenly the phone ringing,OP pick up the phone and an eerie little girl voice said, "you're going to die in 7 days.... "
((((;゜Д゜)))
@Aeri Chan
Oh I hope not! 🤣
Your emoji is cute!

Perhaps they are safe as long as they don’t go near the chimney!

Thank you always for your fun comments ~ 😊❤️

Thank you for the story, Saya! You're finally back!
Now, isn't this chimney more of a cursed object? But why didn't K know of it, considering his hometown's chimney? What about the locals?
Maybe the condition is to tell other people about how you can see the chimney?

About sento, I'm curious and would like to try, but I also admit that I feel kinda reluctant to go if the opportunity arrives. I don't mean to offense people, but using the same water as everyone is using is quite the dealbreaker for me, even if they've washed up beforehand...
@Roberta

You’re very welcome 😄🌸

Yes, perhaps that’s how the curse spread!

Don’t worry! I avoid sentō for the same reasons 🤣
I also don’t like to be seen naked by others even if there are only women.
But some (most often non traditional) sentō have saunas and other facilities, I think. So you can try and hose or just go and have a look for fun ~ ❤️

Thank you so much for your happy comment 💖

This reminds me of a manga chapter. I think it was Fuan no Tane (or its sequel, not sure as I read it almost a decade ago).

The character was in a classroom and noticed a weird high chimney but none of her friends can see it. So when she point at it, her finger got all broken and shriveled up :O

Scary... I would be totally freaking out if that happened to me. Mentioning of a sento will always make me think of the Japanese drama that is on Amazon Prime here in the US: Sunshine Sento Sake.

PS. Let me know if you want to use my "cursed doll picture".

That’s a scary story! I have read a few stories from that manga and I remember them to be good!
I find shorter stories are often scarier than longer ones!

Thank you for your comment 😄
George V:
Oh! It’s the first time I hear that TV drama!
It’s nice to know people who live outside of Japan who appreciate Japanese culture!
Perhaps this happens also in other countries too, but when we live in Japan, we lose the sight of the positive things that we have here.

Oh sure🤣 I will ask you when I need your picture! It will be so appreciated ~ ✨

Thank you so much for your comment!!🙏🏻

Okay this is scary, because within 500 m of where I live is an old Telecommunication Tower from WW2 which still stand and is now providing wifi for everyone. I guess if it was haunted, it would have known more scary stories than I do 😅 and also possibly have seen unbelievable things from the internet 😵‍💫,
I remember reading about "Call of the void" phenomena in which people without any suicidal thoughts suddenly thinks about desire to just jump from high places, or just simply end their lives with anything available, for example when driving near a cliff, or desire to ram your car into the traffic without any explanation. One probable of such example I knew was years ago of someone who jumped from top floor of a mall, survived with broken bones, and was said to have no prior mental issues... Who knows? Maybe there are issues already but others just don't know.
Thanks for your story, it's creepy 👻 since it has possibility to just happen..

Wow! That “Call of the Void” thing is interesting!
I’ve heard the same thing happen on train platforms! People would suddenly have the urge to jump off it as if someone was encouraging them to jump😱

You’re welcome and thank you for sharing this interesting information ~ 😄

I would be more interested with the technology used to erect that chimney
@allucinator
It is an ancient Japanese technology that has been kept secret for hundreds of years, and we are not about to divulge it to a foreigner like you!😱

Just kidding 🤣🤣🤣

It’s pretty amazing how they do it ~ lol

Thank you so much for your comment 🙏🏻

Hello Saya, thank you for the story! Reading this reminds me of my time when I lived in Europe. I could see a factory chimney from my apartment window. Fortunately, nothing weird happened xD

I think in Uzumaki manga, there is also a scene involving a chimney and its creepy smoke.

Last one: a good Japanese movie set in sento/onsen (I forgor lol): Her Love Boils Bathwater. I quite like it

This comments ended up filled with random things around chimney/sento lol

Have a good one, Saya!

You’re welcome 😊✨
I’m glad you came back safe🤣

I’m too scared to read Junji Ito mangas!😱lol

Oh! Thank you for the recommendation! I have never known that such a movie existed!
I’m sure other people here would be interested in it too!

Thank you so much for your comment filled with chimney and sento talks ~ 🤣

Ahh, nothing like a classic spooky story! I think a sentou would be fun to go to. I've never been communal bathing before, and I dont think sitting in the water together is weird. It's not much different than going to a public pool where you have to shower off first. Then again, I'm not very body conscious.

Anyway, sounds like K-san was puzzled by the phantom chimney and went to investigate, and accidentally fell to his death from the chimney while checking it out. Or maybe the spiritual force of the chimney drew him in and up, before dropping him! Either way, I think the teller is safe as long as they dont go looking for trouble.

Fun fact to end on a light note: ants can't actually fall to death. The terminal velocity isnt fast enough to kill them due to their tiny size.
@Steeple
Oh! I didn’t know that ants can’t fall to death! That’s such a fun fact! Thank you for sharing it with us 🤣

I think people find it relaxing to have a bath in a spacious space like sentō! And others don’t stare at your body so you don’t have to worry even if you are shy😆 You can try it one day! (Also sentō is a quiet place during the day!)
