Please someone explain this optical illusion  to me…

I never imagined that the people pressing the buttons would be positioned so close to the death chamber.

⭐️Layout of Execution Chamber

The last three images are from NY Post

2:
If they paid me 50,000 yen, I would gladly press all three buttons each and every time

4:
>>2
How many arms do you have?

31:
>>4
You can use your forehead for the middle button

3:
What’s that blue guy aiming to do?

8:
Let me do it
Also, they should carry out executions more frequently

Note:

The Asahi Shimbun

9:
The way the blue guy is crouching makes him look way too suspicious

12:

The blue guy’s role is to pull the lever and open the trap door in case those three people fail to press the buttons

20:
>>12
All they need is this one blue guy then

27:
>>12
They should have three blue guys too

125:
>>12
Poor blue guy. It would be unfair if they didn’t have two more people for that role.

152:
>>125
Then they would also need a red guy in case the three blue guys couldn’t pull the lever

17:
I’ve read in a book before that there is an officer waiting underneath the trap door whose job is to hold the hanging body to keep it steady.
Imagine how unpleasant it would feel to hold a body that’s spewing out urine and faeces.

Note:
⭐️A drama on showing the execution process:
(The translation of the conversations is in the YouTube comments)

35:
I thought those three people would be in a completely different room and hit the buttons while viewing the execution through a monitor.

43:
There must be many people who would love to press the buttons even if they had to pay for it.

47:
They could construct a new system so that when the time came, the trap door would automatically open by itself.

83:
>>47
In that case, the person who set up the time would be responsible for the killing

49:
Why do they force those people to press the buttons?
Why don’t they set it up so that the door will open automatically when the time comes?
I also think the officers whose job is to take the prisoner to the execution chamber are more likely to be traumatised than those who press the buttons.
Don’t you agree?

50:
Someone could create a Pythagorean device (Note: a Japanese colloquialism for the American Rube Goldberg machine) which would set the execution in motion once the Justice minister signs the warrant with their hanko (Note: a personal seal)

51:
I wish they would hire part timers for this.
I would be more than happy to do the work of three people.

53:
The Justice minister signs the warrant, so they should be the one to do it.
In this day and age, they could easily connect a smartphone to the trap door switch.
That would save them much effort.

56:
Is it always the same button that opens it, or is a different button chosen at random each time the execution takes place?

57:
If I had this job, and killed an innocent person, l’m not sure whether I’d be able to live with the guilt.

61:
But it must be so mentally taxing to kill someone whom you have known and talked with every day.
Prison guards interact with them daily and listen to their life stories and regrets, but then one day, they are ordered to kill them. How hard that must be.
I’ve read that the executioners are randomly chosen from among the guards though.

Unless there is a real possibility of wrongful conviction, the death row inmates have committed unspeakable crimes that makes a death sentence look like an extremely lenient punishment. The prison guards are usually button-bashing with joy.

If the executioners were recruited from the public, there would be so much competition.

62:
Let the victims’ families press the buttons.

92:
Couldn’t they let me do this all alone, at least until I reach my retirement age.

109:
If there is a monitor in front of the inmates, then how about letting them play a video game until they die?
If they got killed by the enemies, that would trigger the trap door switch.
Let them enjoy the last moments of their lives. That’s the least we could do.

129:
Those three people are lucky because they are allowed to go home early on the day of the execution. lol
But I’ve heard that they all go straight to shrines and temples with the money they have earned from the execution.

(Note: Death sentences are normally carried out in the early morning)

139:
>>129
What I’ve heard was they go out and spend all that money on drinking afterwards.

142:
The inmates are led to the death chamber without a previous warning on the morning of the execution, right?
They have to spend every day thinking that the next day might be their final day.
I would go mad if I were in such a situation.

Hello, everyone! I hope you’re all happy!

But this isn’t a very happy topic….😱

Personally, I think killing another human being is wrong even if there’s a good reason for it, BUT if someone murdered my loved ones, I might wish death on the murderer😱

What do you think?

Please leave comments below~ 🩷

Very interesting! Love your posts!

It depends onthe case. Some death row inmates have done unspeakable things without remorse. Other cases look like revenge more than real justice. But it isn't an easy topic

I also believe it is wrong to kill another being, but I can understand the need to for closure, if the person killed someone dear to me.
@Spectra
I’m glad you found it interesting! It’s one dark side to Japanese society 😱
Thank you so much for your feedback 🩷

Exactly!😱
I remember one old Japanese law which was like if a child killed their parents, the penalty was death😱
They changed the law when one woman, who suffered sexual abuse from her father since when she was a child.
She tried to get away from him by marrying someone, but the father brought her back home and continued to abuse her, getting het pregnant. She felt she had no choice but kill him.
This tragic case moved the lawmakers to change the law😱

Thank you so much for sharing your opinions!!
@George V
If someone killed my loved ones, I would probably personally exact revenge on them 😆
But my action would still be wrong.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts ~ 🙏🏻✨

It must be quite hard to be a kaishakunin (介錯人)
@allucinator
You know so many Japanese words ~ 🤣✨

I would hate to be in such a role too!😱

Thank you so much for your comment!!

I'm against the death penalty for several reasons (innocent people, non-prisoners vastly underestimating how agonizing being imprisoned is already, not trusting the state with that power, etc), but I'm surprised hanging is still the method in japan. Ideally the spine would snap but instance where someone suffocates instead must happen, right?

on one hand i understand they dont want suicides but not informing them at all is too cruel for anyone. only an hour or two is not enough time to make peace with the end.

All that said: i laughed at the one poster who talked about hitting all three buttons by headbutting the middle one. Fun fact, sometimes in firing squads some shooters would be given blank rounds to have the same diffusion of guilt. of course, the blanks dont have the same recoil so in practice a soldier could tell if they fired a live round or not
@Steeple

It seems Japan chooses hanging as its execution method because it’s considered the most humane way of execution as (just like you have pointed out) the person who is hanged loses consciousness immediately if it’s rightly done. But the possibility of botched executions is not zero😱

Yes, that was a funny part 🤣

Thank you for sharing your knowledge about firing squads 😱

@Saya_In_Underworld
makes sense! i didnt think the method would be chosen to be cruel, after all, and generally the method fo a death penalty is to minimize the suffering. actually, the guillotine was invented for that very reason. Beheadings with an axe or sword could often go wrong, requiring multiple strikes to completely sever the head. with a guillotine it was a clean cut every time, removing human error. that was the idea, anyway.

you're welcome! im in the habit of reading a broad range of topics and picking up trivia along the way. when my family watches Jeopardy (a quiz show), i often pipe up with the more specialized knowledge. general politics and sports however... not so much lmao
@Steeple:
Guillotine was named after the person who invented it, right?
I wonder if there are still people whose surnames are Guillotine😱 that would be awkward!

It’s great that you are familiar with a wide range of topics like that! It must be very interesting to converse with you! 😊
