This is a story a friend of mine told me.

My friend used to be (to use an old-fashioned expression) a Yankee (Note: a juvenile delinquent).
He rarely attended classes at high school, preferring to loaf around with his friends.

Practically all the teachers had given up on him, but his tannin (Note: 担任, the teacher in charge of the class) was different.
The teacher was known for his tenacity, who was always willing to give everything his best shot.

Every time my friend found himself in danger of repeating a year, the teacher was always by his side, tirelessly offering him support and words of encouragement.
My friend was of course resistant to the teacher’s support.
But I guess either the teacher’s or his own efforts paid off, and he managed to get a job at a construction company after he finished high school.

And then during October last year, my friend had a strange dream.
He was in his high school classroom.  The  room was dimly lit, and he saw a few other students around him.

On the platform at the front of the room stood his teacher, who was smiling broadly.

Then the teacher suddenly wrote the word “自習 (Jishū, Self Study)”on the blackboard, declaring:
“We have a holiday starting from tomorrow, but I have some homework for you!”

My friend yelled “no way ~~!,” to which the teacher responded with a smile, saying:
“This is the last homework I am giving to you — Be Happy.”

When my friend woke up, he had an indescribable, strange feeling about it.

On the same day around lunchtime, he was informed of the teacher’s sudden death.
I don’t know what caused it but only heard that he passed away suddenly.

The other day, when I went out for a drink with him, he told me that it was his teacher’s death anniversary that day. That is how I came to know this story.

Seeing my friend — who was usually a tough, rough-spoken guy — silently weeping made me realise that he was still fulfilling his duty as a student and continuing with his teacher’s last homework.
