Izu

It seems I snore really loudly, likely because I’m overweight.

The other day, we went on a company trip to a hot spring in Izu.
In the middle of the night, I happened to wake up and realized there was no one else in the hotel room.

Apparently, the weaker-hearted kōhai (junior colleagues) I was sharing the room with couldn’t take my snoring anymore and had fled to stay in someone else’s room.
Well, whatever. I thought, “May as well go take a leak,” and headed toward the bathroom—only to find the lights wouldn’t turn on!

(As I found out later, it was one of those rooms where you have to insert the room key to activate the power—and the juniors had taken the key with them.)

Feeling a bit uneasy, I decided to leave the door open and pee sitting down in the dark, like a proper adult.

…After a short while, I heard:
“Patter… patter… patter…”
The sound of bare feet walking across the room!

Ahh, I see what’s going on here.
Clearly, my kōhai were trying to get back at me for the snoring by setting up some kind of jump scare.

“Ha! Clever boys. But I’m even more cunning than you. I’ll turn the tables.”

Grinning to myself, I quietly slipped out of the room through the door, sneaking down the hallway and exiting through the emergency exit to circle around to the courtyard.

Our room was on the ground floor, right on the corner, so it was easy to get around from the outside.
Making sure not to be seen, I crept up to the window and peered inside.

In the pitch-black room, I could make out a figure standing there.

Taking a deep breath, I suddenly rattled the window and yelled at the top of my lungs:

“HEY!!”

The figure inside instantly turned and slid toward me—smoothly, in a straight line!

“Wait… they’re not scared…? Wait a minute—that’s not one of the kōhai!? WHAT THE HELL?!”

I looked again—
A woman in a traditional kimono, holding a tray, her head bowed… charging straight at me!

“Oh crap.
That’s not human.”

I bolted. Barefoot, running as fast as I could.
When I glanced back, she was chasing me, tray in hand, trembling with this weird clattering sound.

I didn’t stop.
Eventually, I made it to another colleague’s room, banged on the door, and they let me in. We could hear the tray rattling back and forth in front of the door for a while… and then, finally, it went quiet.

The next morning, I told the kōhai what happened.

They said:

“It wasn’t because of your snoring. We left because there was a woman standing over your bed, staring at your face the whole time you were sleeping.
We got too scared and ran.”

Thank you for reading❤️

This is a story that I first read when I was quite young and is therefore memorable for me !
It starts off funny but is quite chilling at the end, don’t you think?

Let me know what you think about it! 😊

Hello Saya ☺️

She was probably waiting for narrator to wake up to provide room service and serve tea.
So no tip and her kpi that night probably suffered. Nowadays even ghosts have to work hard.

@nunu that makes sense!🤣 Now I feel sorry for the woman! I hope I won’t have to work so hard if I ever become a ghost! Thank you so much for your comment ~ 😆🙏🏻
